Why a Kava Bar Instead of a Coffee Shop?

The obvious answer is the hours. The less obvious one is the drink itself.

Caffeine works by blocking adenosine, the molecule that builds up through the day and makes you feel tired. It doesn’t create energy — it hides fatigue and then hands it back with interest. If you drink a large coffee at 9 PM to get through a paper, you are very likely still awake at 2 AM whether you want to be or not, and caffeine’s half-life of roughly five to six hours means a meaningful amount is still in your system the next morning.

Kava works differently. Kavalactones, the active compounds in Piper methysticum, produce a calm, clear-headed state rather than a stimulant push. There is no jitter, no racing heart, and no crash on the back end. For reading, writing, editing, and reviewing notes — the bulk of most study sessions — a lot of people find that steadier baseline more useful than being chemically alert.

The honest caveat: kava is relaxing. If you need to grind through something that genuinely demands a stimulant edge, kava is not that. And nothing here replaces sleep. But if the problem is that you’re anxious about an exam and can’t settle into the material, kava is very good at exactly that.

Practical Notes Before You Come

It is a bar, not a library. There are pool tables, TVs and music, and Friday nights get loud — we run karaoke. If you need silence, the outdoor patio is generally the calmer option, and weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quietest stretches of the week. Tuesday poker night, Wednesday pool tournaments and Thursday trivia all bring energy into the room after about 8 PM.

Bring ID. Entry is 18+ for kava; kratom drinks are 21+. It is an alcohol-free venue.

Cheapest way to sit for a few hours: a 24 oz botanical tea is $8 and lasts. Any of our 28 in-house flavors can be added at no extra charge. If you time it to a happy hour — 7–8 AM, 12–1 PM, 5–7 PM or 12–1 AM — a double shell of kava is $6.

Lowkey Kava is at 404 S Military Trail, West Palm Beach, FL 33415, about 10 minutes west of downtown and Clematis Street. From I-95 take the Southern Boulevard or Forest Hill Boulevard exit and head west to Military Trail. It’s roughly 12 minutes from Palm Beach Atlantic University, 10 from Greenacres, 12 from Lake Worth Beach and 15 from Wellington. Free parking in our own lot.
